SCHOOLWIDE INTEGRATION FOR AN EFFECTIVE SCHOOL LEARNING COMMUNITY

Background: The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (1997/2004) requires that students with disabilities be provided with an opportunity to be educated within a general education setting to the maximum extent appropriate (20 U.S. C. § 1412 [a] [5] ). Federal law intends that students with disabilities be educated in schools they would attend if they did not have a disability. The Modified Consent Decree Outcomes 7A & 7B target the integration of students with disabilities.

Purpose: The resources included on this page are made available to assist schools with the integration of students with moderate to severe disabilities into the general education classroom.

The training modules below, and the activities included within, were developed for School Integration Teams to review together. The training provides an awareness of moderate to severe disabilities, guide the formation of support teams and plans, and provide guidance in support of student learning in the general education setting.

(1) Ability Awareness online training modules

• These presentations provide an overview of specific disabilities, strategies and assistance for instructing students. Topic areas include: Audiology, Autism, Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Emotional Disturbance, Mental Retardation, Visual Impairment.

(2)Yours, Mine, Ours online training modules

• Provides schools with information on their role in the implementation of Outcome 7
• Reviews the components of the integration support plan
• Describes the role of the Integration Support Team in developing/implementing the Integration Support Plan
